Similiar to GTA IV & GTA V style, if not the same. It´s simple, easy, feels good and smooth running, driving and shooting around the Open World with your character exploring the new stuff and collecting the hidden trophies, we all want that 100% at the end of the game.
The beginning was nice, introducing us to our character Lincoln Clay with our first mission being Bank infliltration and stealing the money. I even liked the fact they stopped the mission midway and we went back in time a few days to "remember" and play thought the past and come to this very same mission by finding out what we did to come to this very moment. This flashback was cool, we had a few missions in it and I like the fact you can do it either stealth or just rampage in there by shooting. After playing few missions we came back to the bank case and started again at the spot and time where our flashback on the last week started... Finishing the mission and getting my hopes up about this game was great, but all I got is disappointment.
Why disappointment? Don´t get me wrong here, the shooting, setting, characters and soundtrack are all great and awesome, but the gameplay story, is simply dull and repetive without anything changing thought the whole game.
I like, or better said, I love the fact we are working together with CIA Agent and taking over the territories + destroying the mafia organization piece by piece, but the main problem here is it is simply repetive gaming doing the same thing over and over again in each and every new city/territory out there. All we do is doing enough damage to the bosses income so that he shows up and then we just have to go there and kill him. Not to mention, they show up at the places I already cleaned up and destroyed which makes no sense at all. Simply said, the whole game runs around the two things, drive around the city and do enough "money" damage and then kill the boss/leader. If they implanted there a few missions where you have to do it another way around or just somehow where I can´t run inside and just shoot everyone finishing the mission in 5 minutes. I hate the fact that we don´t have to do something "undercover" or just change our clothes for the missions and steal something. I had to steal 10,000$ in one mission where the place was full with cops outside and inside, but it took me 2 minutes to go inside and finish it while the cops were making out with girls outside in one ally. How the hell is it possible you can´t notice a searched black man going inside your bar 5 meter behind you? It just makes no sense, plus the fact those 10,000$ were just out there, not in a safe or something.
Dull and repetive gaming, again. If you like the shooting and running around the open world, please do play it because you will have fun with it. For me, a game such as Mafia III needs to have the difference in missions, because that´s what makes it great and fun playing. If I wanted shooting game, I´d go and play Call of Duty Multiplayer.
More to it. Weapon battles or let´s just say battlefields feel good, you can run around and be pro active in it while being able to cover yourself behind any object next or infront of you, cover feels good and is running smooth with no problems, great mechanics are not needed, it´s simple to get a hang of it.
But, the enemy is disappointing too. They just run towards you and try to close the range being open for you to shoot down and go ahead, even their covering is not much, the heads are visible and easy to shoot down. If you want any challenge against computer bots, play the game on the hardest level.
Tooltips are annoying repeating everything over and over, like we won´t ever get a hang of it. There are a few great perks in the game I like, like calling the backup to help you take the enemies down, or the perk of turning all the phones off and calling the cops off, but that´s all to it.
The best perk here is calling the weapon dealer to you, and he really does come to you in a matter of seconds for you to buy or replenish your ammo/weapons.
Mechanics are easy, one button for crouching, one button for stealth takedowns and one button for covers is all you need to do the missions in a stealth way. I don´t think I need to add anything here, but if you already played a game similiar to this like GTA IV or V, you should be alright with Mafia III.
