Decoding One Piece : Fathers
Hi everyone! I've been reading the theories here so I wanted to share mine;
After all that has been happening in the Zou Arc and Sanji's father, I wanted to share my theory about some of the strawhats’s parents.
I’ve been reflecting a lot upon it because I feel like One piece went gear 15 and everything is gonna be revealed pretty soon. I wanted to take a guess ☺
I tried to bring as much points/proofs as possible from the manga, so I apologize in advance for my english and for the length of this thing![:) :)]()
And of course, spoilers ahead.
I was more and more convinced about one of the messages that Oda sensei wants us to see and engrave in our minds from one piece (and the world in general).
Things are almost never what they seem to be at first sight. (Vivi, Sir Crocodile the hero, Doflamingo, the great king, Nami’s betrayal, robin’s assassination, Franky, etc.)
One thing that we can all agree about: The parallelism in the different generations of pirates/ marines/shishibukai. The « Obvious » ones are Roger/Shanks/Luffy, Rayleigh/ Mihawk/ Zoro, etc.
BUT
Like the recurring pirate’s cross, what if it was the opposite, what if one piece wasn’t some linear story, designed in a way that strays us from the actual truth. What if one piece was like a maze of basically the same characters sharing or having the same will.
We have here the flow of time with the generations and the inherited will.
Let’s begin with what I think is the most complex, fascinating and hardest character to understand in One Piece : Monkey D. Luffy.
Luffy’s Real father : The Origins : a Devil in the making
For some reason, Luffy bothered me ever since the time skip, and even more since his « fight » with Fujitora, the crew was in danger, they’re all injured, and picks a fight with an admiral, like an 8 year old, telling him look look at me how I’m kicking your ass.
I hate that Luffy, he feels the burning need to prove himself because he couldn’t save Ace, but does it in an enraged and irrational way. I feel like luffy’s antics aren’t fun for the crew in the new world, because the consequences will be GRAVE, and sorry won’t cut it anymore.
Let’s talk about Shanks’ « fated » meeting with Luffy first, If I’m correct a lot of people think that it was weird and awfully convenient.
The question it raises is this one,
Why on earth, a great pirate like Shanks, uses Fushia village as a base for a whole year?
The answer is obvious: Luffy.
But Why Luffy? He was 6 at the time, why would shanks spend his precious time especially with him? Doesn’t he have some urgent matter to attend to?
One of the reasons: because of Luffy’s real Father, the potential risk Luffy represents, (he is far from ordinary) but also the fact that shanks needs him for Raftel, he is a special D (lol).
How the hell, a rare devil fruit, the Gomu Gomu no mi, is carelessly put near Luffy (he was sitting), escapes the line of vision of shank’s whole crew, btw, with Yasopp who is the actual SOGEKING lol which means that with his observation Haki, he can see your freaking atoms AND shanks who had the freaking CoC at that time?
No Way.
History seems to be repeating itself, after Shanks accidently made buggy eat the Bara Bara no mi.
Knowing Luffy’s weakness : his limitless gluttony, a trait he mysteriously seems to share with BB…
I think he or Ben Beckman (whom Oda states is the smartest character in One Piece) got the idea from that particular incident to make Luffy eat the devil fruit. (Luffy became happier and more easy going after eating it, it is a play on “I’m rubber and you’re glue”, which correlates with Shank’s teachings to Luffy)
Shanks loosing an arm to a sea monster while Luffy handed its ass to it 10years later and was probably like: Haki? Can you poop it?
Are you f*cking kidding me?
I have a hard time believing he’d lose something this precious to him that easily. It is that or oh my I spy plot hole/lazy ass writing.
Unless… it was done intentionally…
Like Shanks said to WB, « I bet it on the next era ». He chose to do it.
He called the sea king to save Luffy and eat the bandit, and then told him to get lost while losing his swordsman’s arm, thus earning a freaking HUGE I owe you from Luffy and his father.
And also, marking Luffy forever and teaching him that for your friends/nakama’s life, you should sacrifice any treasure/dream/Life.
Before that, Luffy had a very prideful and angry side, didn’t understand shank’s way of thinking (he called him coward and told him he never wanted to see him again after he laughed off the sake incident).
Luffy then tried to « imitate » this way of thinking in Mock Town whit Bellamy.
I never liked this scene, while I loved Shanks’.
Shanks always said, don’t mess with my nakama! You can laugh at ME or spit on ME. Luffy didn’t understand the deep meaning of this: You should swallow your personal pride to avoid meaningless fighting BUT never when a nakama is hurt.
He ordered his first nakama, Zoro, to let himself get beaten up to a pulp along with him.
You want another proof of that? If Blackbeard praises you for what you did, then chances are, your logic behind your actions may be retarded.
That is NOT what Shanks meant, at all.
His Grampa is Monkey D. Garp, that, we are sure of.
But the more I read through the manga, the more I found myself more and more certain of this:
Dragon isn’t Luffy’s father.
They are so different, physically and mentally and when you read carefully, there are many, many hints about that.
Just like Kinemon isn’t Momo’s dad, but was presented as such, I think it’s a foreshadowing so we wouldn’t be too shocked when the truth comes out about Luffy’s real dad.
Let me explain why.
I think very highly of Oda- Sensei, so I consequently believe that his reasoning and depth go beyond those of a 2 year old.
He never goes the obvious route and makes us work and wait for the truth while creating such amazing characters, without potholes witch is amazing.
So, something rubbed me the wrong way the moment Garp said in water 7:
« You know what, Luffy…
Dragon, and I know it’s weird to learn about your dad when you didn’t even think you actually had a father, but I suddenly have the urge and need to tell you for the first time in front of your whole crew and a bunch of marines you don’t know, Dragon, the dude that everyone is scared of, is your dad,
xoxo – Gossip Girl aka Funny Sleepy Tea Biscuits Fist of Love Gramps »
The way he waited to drop that bombshell in front of literally EVERYONE just seemed off, and the way it was used in the war of the great, just like Ace’s father was milked is just too, bizarre, too convenient, just to show everyone that « The Bloodline » is dead.
We’ve all seen that the marines can be cunning and not above trickery and betrayal.
Then, after everyone reacted, Garp said: Shit, maybe I should have kept my mouth shut, while sweating, like a pig on fire.
Why was he so uncomfortable? He’s been a Vice admiral for a shitload of time, he, of all people, knows the implication of saying dragon’s name. Dragon has been labeled the worst criminal in the world, it shouldn’t be surprising, least of all to Garp, that everyone is losing his shit because of his statement.
The only possible explanation:
He was LYING, and just like his grandson, he is bad at it.
Moreover, Dragon seems to be evasive about Luffy, always eluding the subject when people ask him a direct question about him, seems hesitant or says “sure yeah” when someone mentions his “son” or always with mysterious « … »
I Think Dragon met Luffy when he was a child because he knows Garp.
He was just next to Luffy when the Grey Terminal was on fire, why did he save a bunch of guys he didn’t know first, chillin’ like a boss, while Ace awakened his King’s Haki because the situation was so dire for Luffy, supposedly his only son?
Illogical.
And, The gorosei, Sengoku, and almost everyone always refers to Luffy as Straw-hat or Garp’s Grandson. Very Rarely as Dragon’s son, except by shitty characters like the fake luffy in Sabondy or just people who believe the world government (who is notoriously known for hiding the truth and staging lame crap, void century anyone?).
Now the question is, why would Dragon go along with the lie?
The reason:
Let’s get real, Luffy is protected from some of the strong marines by Garp’s hero status: Almost every marine who has had a chance to kill/capture Luffy, just didn’t. When I saw Sengoku/Gorousei/Garp’s reaction to Luffy’s antics plus the fact that he is the son’s worst criminal (that normally would glue an admiral to his ass like an obsessive girl/boy friend): It was like : oh you !!! Luffy has done something dumb again, whahahaha.
…Therefore, Dragon’s real son stays protected, out of the spotlight and also because of the hope that Luffy might not give completely into his primal instincts, like his real father.
It is safe to say that Dragon has undercover allies in the marines, as well as some of the shishibukai.
Plus, Garp has had time to tell Luffy about his dad several times, he could have told him in private, but no, he waited to drop this like it was staged, like when Jimbei wanted to stage Luffy as the hero in Fishman island, Akainu with WB, or when Doffy staged his rescue of Dressrosa.
Tricks are a recurring theme in One Piece, we may be victim of one ☺.
I believe the biggest trick (and a freaking genius one i might add) in one piece is Luffy.
I’m almost certain of dragon’s son identity, which is a strawhat I believe, but I’ll get back to that after I’m done with Luffy.
LUFFY’s OBJECTIVE EVOLUTION (meaning, analyzing the words and actions of the character while ignoring his angelic cute face and laugh, imagine Luffy as the fake luffy in sabondy
)
Luffy’s Childhood:
Luffy is very kind, honest to a fault, loyal friend with an endless will to survive when having an objective. But he is very selfish, he was a crybaby, has a tendency to attract trouble, has an endless will to live when it comes to saving his friends (pre time skip) that stems from, if we believe Luffy himself, his fear of being alone and having no one to rely on.
Like BB, tears into giant pieces of meat like a motherf*cking banana crocodile, it is not normal, even starving the whole crew who is broke because of that!
I know it has a comedy purpose, but one event can obviously have more than one reason.
Weirdly so, BB, (who thinks strangely like Luffy, Sky Island, screaming dreams never die, etc.) does the same.
Fun Fact, We of course know he eats too much, but we take it as a joke, what if it wasn’t? What if it has a very important meaning we’ve been missing? he wasn’t able to swim BEFORE even eating any devil fruit. Weird, he lives right next to the sea and really wants to learn how to swim and become a pirate…unless he just can’t, which indicates that his body structure/density is not common, funny, just like BB, again.
When we see Blackbeard scarfing down food, it’s kind of disgusting and it looks dangerous, like a cannibal. It goes right up the alley of him « eating » without moderation 2/3 devil fruits. It is scary.
Ace’s death changed Luffy, he is bitter and wants to beat up the whole world, even Shanks!! He just said, well as long as he’s not the first. ????
But when it comes to Luffy, it is almost cute.
That’s the trick. (like boa Hancock gets away with everything thanks to her beauty, Luffy does with his strange cute innocent charm and a crew who always end up cleaning his messes).
He only does what he wants, even if it affects badly others, he just says sorry.
Like he said in the Arlong Ark, he can’t do anything, he relies mostly on oders and never ever lived alone!
Just like BB, he always claims he’ll become the pirate king, and now, he kind of angry about it, it changed.
Rayleigh said that Roger never claimed to be the pirate King; people called him that without him asking for it.
Roger said he wanted to turn the world upside down.
Ace wanted to be a big shot pirate and show the world.
Luffy wants to be free and actually said I don’t want to be a snooty big shot pirate before the underling’s vow.
Luffy might look like Roger/Ace in appearance, but he is NOT like him, Oda tells us so in terms of action, not words. Roger always stayed behind to protect his crew; he never went ahead first for the fame, or the beat the strongest if there was a real danger. He never ran away either, and that was in his Blood, just, like Ace. It means he never did it, and didn’t need to be taught not to!
Sabondy : Luffy : RUN AWAYYY, while the captain himself, runs away ?
I love Luffy, but he “plays” captain, he doesn’t carry the responsibility of the whole crew on his shoulders.
Not the Roger described in the manga, Dragon seems to be like Roger (I wanna change the world!)
Now,
DUM DUM DUM, my theory:
Luffy’s father is Kaido, Garp’s son, and the strongest « creature » in the world.
That is why Garp never told Luffy about his father, he is, as described, the devil incarnate, reckless, doesn’t want to have a boring adventure so starts wars, destroys everything when doesn’t come up with a quick solution ( like Luffy/Noah), doesn’t think through things, LOVES the snow, just like Luffy states mysteriously, his face and beard bear a similarity to gear 4 luffy, a pirate and garp’s shame and secret.
That is why Garp is so adamant about Luffy not becoming a pirate, not becoming like his father. He wasn’t like « One thing is for sure, you’ll never become a revolutionary, Hell no bitch!! » Because that wasn’t the threat of him becoming a marine, it was the pirate side, just like confirms the village chief in fushia village : « Was it his fate to become a pirate ? »
Why would that be his fate since Garp is a Marine and Dragon a rev?
Another hint is the name of Luffy’s new attacks, theme beasts for luffy!, He trained with Beasts alone for 6months (I always found weird Rayleigh departing beforehand, teaching Luffy only the basics of haki? )
Kaido 100 beasts reminded.
But shanks came in and ruined everything for Garp, so Garp moved Luffy to Dadan and forbade Luffy to go back to the village where he met Shanks.
As we already know, Shanks clashed with Kaido to protect Ace/WB, he wants Kaido’s son by his side, he is his enemy, a monstrously strong creature, and needs him for the one piece since he’s a D. He grooms him and teaches him values since Garp doesn’t give a F*ck about that, LENDS him the straw-hat with the promise that he’ll become a GREAT pirate (NOT the pirate king) arrive to the New World and reach Raftel, with the hope that luffy won’t succumb to his evil nature.
After he becomes a great pirate and since Luffy wants to prove himself to shanks, he knew he would eventually end up fighting Kaido.
Funny, It’s by the greatest twist of fate (Or not Lol), more of a will, that Law saved Luffy in Marineford earning Luffy’s trust and talking him into the alliance to take down Kaido.
I believe Luffy is the only one who can defeat Kaido, and there we have it : a father and son epic fight! Luffy facing his dark side!
It is a brilliantly strategic plan created by Beckman, the smartest guy in one piece.
If you go read the part where Mihawk talks about the Humandrils, I believe it was a metaphor about what the war and Ace’s death did to Luffy.
Shanks is actually with the revolutionary army (I think), hinted by the mascot of his ship, a red dragon. He is good at persuading people and okay with manipulating as long as it is for a greater reason, or to save lives, as he’s shown in the war with Buggy.
Mihawk too, In my opinion.
Dragon’s Son
It’s Zoro.
He has a complicated relationship with his father, if we read carefully:
and due to obvious circumstances, it is safe to assume he made a promise with his father never to tell anyone.
WHY Zoro?
Attack names.
From the start, If I’m not mistaken, he is the only one with Sabo, to have a range of dragon themed attack names. Dragon twister, great dragon shock on Monet, dragon attack + freaking blue flames on Ryuma etc.We have to remember that Zoro didn't eat a devil fuit, he his not normal, Zoro isn't a demon, he is a dragon I think. That is why Ryumma felt like he was fighting the dragon again!
In Film Z, he changed into a dragon/haki/spirit. He creates tornadoes and slashes of Wind. Dragon is all about the weather.
Loguetown.
When Dragon saved luffy, Sanji aksed zoro if he believed in God, he avoided the question and had a dark but not surprised look on his face. His aversion to god comes from his father, because he has godlike powers.
After the scene with smoker and the gust of wind sent by Dragon, Zoro had a panicked look on his face and grabbed a very confused Luffy and said: There’s a HUGE ass storm coming!!! We need to leave or we’ll be trapped!!
But Zoro, since when can you actually predict the weather and its consequences? Are you Nami?
Since Never!
Which can only mean thing: Zoro at least had beforehand an idea of Dragon’s power, and he feared it.
But then Dragon added: Go on then, if that is your choice!
He was talking to his son and saving the crew, except Luffy never had the choice to leave the island, Zoro hauled his ass while he asked what was going on, it was Zoro’s choice to go on!
Water 7
Garp and his lie.
Zoro is almost never shown while Garp is talking about dragon, except once, with a puzzled look on his face. Always found weird that he had almost no reaction while even robin did.
Maybe Garp was testing him? To know his lineage? But it was an epic fail, that is maybe why he regretted saying it. Garp always makes stupid plans like luffy.
Thriller Bark
The whole ordeal with Kuma, the revolutionary.
He wanted to take Luffy’s head!! But, when Zoro offered himself up, Kuma could have just cut his head clean off, deflected him on a sky island, taking him to the WG, why go through all that pain/damage/hell nonsense WITHOUT killing him?
And “because Zoro is one of the main characters and it was a baddass scene” just doesn’t cut it.
And then, Kuma’s speech to dragon:
I expected no less of your son.
Just after the beauty of his action for his crew. He is of course talking about his judgment of Zoro since he didn’t even get to talk with Luffy. Zoro abandoned his dream for, as he states “ I see no other way to help the crew right now”. Zoro helps people, just like it was shown in dressrosa with the bird cage. That is why Robin said : “hahaha, just like him.”. She was talking about Dragon.
Sabondy
Kuma saved the crew and sent Zoro first to his dream: Hawkeye.
Nice symbolic gesture since he had decided to give up on his dream!
Grey Terminal
Dragon’s ship is boarded 10 years ago where Zoro trains with Kuina in the village dojo, he even says that the dojo gave them food, (dragon seems awfully chummy with the guy raising zoro) while we see an angry looking zoro training. He let his crew in zoro’s village while he went to keep an eye on the tenryubito.
Why would Oda show us this kind of what the f*ck zoro panel in the middle of luffy and ace’s story?
Because it is an important hint. It shows a hint of sabo being saved by Dragon and that he feels safe enough to drop anchor there. It shows dragon visiting his son.
The fact that his hair is green, might be because he is actually a green dragon, or because of his mother, or, in my opinion :
If you remember in Little Garden Miss Goldenweek with the emotion painting, paints Luffy with a "calming green", and says that this color calms a person.
It might be a hint that Zoro needs to be "calmed" while Dragon has a red tattoo on his face, (Red is the bull fighting emotion) so all Zoro's anger might be directed at Dragon!
Finally, this cover page:
Big hint, It looks like the Bounty Posters after Doffy fight, Luffy is usually the first one, Zoro the second.
http://mangafox.me/manga/one_piece/vTBD/c818/1.html
Koala is saying something about the second bounty while Dragon is sweating and Sabo is like ROFL (he knows, that is why he wanted to talk to dragon about luffy the minute he recovered his memories, he knows something doesn't quite add up).
Prediction:
Luffy is an Oni, like BB, Kaido etc. He is threat but also a solution.
I think we will see the dark side of luffy.
In Zou, he will want to fight jack I think, he might lose to Jack, because he has been struggling quite a lot in the New World, always getting injured like crazy, and fighting more and more meaningless fights, without thinking. he’s become less mature after these years, so he might start a fight he can’t win. Then Inu/Neko/Zoro/Law/Blabla will take down Jack.
That’s when the crew is going the split because of a fight, just like with usopp in water 7.
I feel like it’s an “Enies Lobby Arc”. It’s gonna be emotional, difficult.
I think the one who will fight Kaido is his son, Luffy, when he questions himself again, and awakens. Much similar to the way he fought Z.
THE END
PS: All of this might be utter bullsh*t, of course.
Thanks for reading, I hope you enjoyed it ☺
PS2 :
I forgot to add something, I think this is one of Oda's inspirations for Luffy
The Tanuki
Calling Chopper tanuki was to dupe us.
http://www.onmarkproductions.com/html/tanuki.shtml
Main characteristics of the tanuki :
Straw hat, promissory note (Luffy always says I'll pay you back with my treasure), a giant scrotum (LOL) that can stretch.
Nice magical creature, easily duped, attracks trouble by his goofiness. Tanuki imitates grand political figures (shanks) and can even disguise itself as the Moon.
The nice side of the tanuki, the japanese creature : It's correlates with luffy's kindness pre time skip.
BUT
The origins of the tanuki are from evil foxes in china, trait that disappeared in the mythical japanese tanuki.
So post time --> we return to the origins of the tanuki, the evil fox.
