Info
A role-playing game is a game in which players assume the roles of characters in a fictional setting. Players take responsibility for acting out these roles within a narrative, either through literal acting or through a process of structured decision-making or character development. Actions taken within many games succeed or fail according to a formal system of rules and guidelines.

There are several forms of RPG. The original form, sometimes called the tabletop RPG, is conducted through discussion, whereas in live action role-playing games players physically perform their characters' actions. In both of these forms, an arranger called a game master usually decides on the rules and setting to be used and acts as referee, while each of the other players plays the role of a single character.

Several varieties of RPG also exist in electronic media, such as multi-player text-based MUDs and their graphics-based successors, massively multiplayer online role-playing games. Role-playing games also include single-player role-playing video games in which players control a character or team who undertake quests, and may include capabilities that advance using statistical mechanics. These games often share settings and rules with tabletop RPGs, but emphasize character advancement more than collaborative storytelling.

Besides video-game role-playing games there is a lot of other ways of role-play, like tabletop and text-based.

I am going to talk more about text-based role-plays since they aren't as well known as video-games and tabletop and it's easier to play everywhere and all the time.

Text-based ones are really easy to do. You will need:
  • A place to role-play, website, irl textbooks, sms, mail or something like that. Anywhere where you can write.
  • A story. You can either create your own story, where you make anything by scratch, or you take a allready excisting story like a book and movie you like and take the set-up from there.
  • Some rules. You can have different rules, like for exampel that you can't power play, which means you can't controle someones elses character. Other rules can be if you are going to have a order, which typ of storytelling you are going to have, what kind of thing you can do etc.
  • Some people. You will need at least one more person. You can be how many people you feel like. I personaly think even numbers are the best because then you can split up in grupes if you feel like it and no one needs to be alone. And if you have to large of people in the role-play it's just get's messy. But this is just my personaly oppinion.
  • Some characters. This is kind of given, because without characters there is no roleplay. Here you can either make your own character or take an already existing depending on what you feel like. And it's often easier to come up with characters that goes well together in age, race (depending on what kind of role you have. It can be strange to have an elf and a human if you aren't playing anything with fantasy), powers etc.
  • And a world. The last thing you need is a world where the role-play can take place. Here you can also make your own world like with the story or you can take an already existing world. You can also mix and match it with an already existing world with a new story and new characters. Or a new world with already existing characters etc.

Besides that you need a template when you create your character. I often use:
  • Name:
  • Appearance: either with picture or you describe it.
  • Age:
  • Gender:
  • Family:
  • Weapons:
  • Powers: if there is a role where you have powers.
  • (Personality) : this is something that can be hard to describe since it can change.
  • Other: If there is something else you need to tell the other players.

Then you describe the world if there is a world the other players doesn't know the world our if you want to have som rules and how the world works. And if you have chosen an already existed world and if you have change something.

Then you chose where to start the story, if the character knows each other, if they have some type of relationship and if there is other characters around and if everyone can role-play the non-playabel characters. What the goal with the story are, if you have an ultimate goal or not.

Then after that it's just to start role-playing.

So have any of you tried it? do you want to try it? Does it sounds fun? What do you think of it?
