This is a review of the Zankyou no Terror anime, with the purpose of helping you decide whether or not to watch the anime. This thread will contain no major spoilers and if there is one there will be a spoiler warning.

Synopsis
İmage

Setting

The anime takes place in an alternate version of the world today. There is no existence of any non-human beings or beings that would be considered "alien". It is set in the city of Tokyo, keeping away from the bigger and more known areas of the city and instead focusing on more residential areas.

Spoiler: Evaluation
I think this is one of the most visial appealing anime's I've ever had the pleasure of watching; the colours are perfect and light in order to contrast the darkness of the show; the city is drawn wonderfully and ther is no lack of detail.

Plot

In an alternate iteration of the present, Tokyo has been hit by a terrorist attack that has devastated the city. The only evidence of the culprits is a cryptic video uploaded to the Internet, which sparks paranoia across Japan. Unbeknownst to the authorities is that the terrorist masterminds, who call themselves "Sphinx" are two teenage boys who go by the names Nine and Twelve. Though they apparently should not exist, they have nonetheless decided to "wake up the world" with their heinous plans of destruction, with their fingers on the trigger

Spoiler: Evaluation
Story: The story seems to take a darker than usual toll on the characters, it seems to be speaking to the world of the present as well and by doing that they decided upon sing means of terrorism to get the attention of the citizens and the police. There aren't many animes that do that nor are there that many that could possibly "hit close to home" and make you think about the implications of certain things and event in your day-to-day life.

Development and Content: Zankyou no Terror seems to have a good pace and doesn't keep one on the edge for too long, the anime is short but each episode is packed with incredible content and makes it all the more interesting to watch. In terms of content there seems to be something new added to every episode, more information that will help you assemble the pieces and make one understand why the boys are doing what they are doing. The loops holes are filled, the reasons are explained and all in all it never stops making sense.

Characters
İmage

The characters in the above image are essentially the main cast of the anime; the two boys being the protagonists/antagonists and the remaining three being their balance in the world. There are several interactions with a multitude of characters through the decorum of the anime yet these are where the plot is at.

Spoiler: Evaluation
Content: In terms of character back story they all seem to have had an intense past which leads the the explanation of what they are today, of what they've grown to become. The y each bring something different and something special to the show and you can get an insight of the way they think and act as well, the depth of each individual character carries so much weight on them and on the others that it does make it feel like a real life situation amongst real people.

Screen time: It's pleasantly well divided between the two main characters; often switching back and fourth from one to the other in order to get a sense of what each is doing at that specific moment, it also shows a lot of the remainder of the main cast, doing their own thing almost seemingly unaware of what's happening, so the reactions we see from there are all on the spot and at the same time as whatever is happening somewhere off screen.

Supporting Characters: The characters of Five, Lisa and Shibazaki are all o[f top notch quality, all I've said previously in terms of characters applied to these as well; they are intense and they have their own sense of being and own sense of purpose, or lack thereof, they are individuals who are affected by the events and bring their own influence to the events that will happen later on after their introduction. The characters of Twelve and Nine have a different connection with each of these supporting characters and it helps them grow.

Design: As much as this anime seems to have a non-traditional feel to the design of the scenery and the characters we cannot deny it's beauty. Everything seems to flow together perfectly, from the fact that it's summer in Tokyo the time this takes place and the characters have to wear these lighter clothes and lighter colours, it all points to a more realistic than animation side of thing, it makes the characters seem like real people, even if just for a second.

Animation/Art Style/Music

Animation: The animation in the show, as I've mentioned before, seems to flow perfectly and it seems to be more realistic than other animes, I believe that the point of this was to make people see that even though it's an anime it can be closely compared to the real world. But besides flowing perfectly there seems to be this lightness to it as well, something not that easy to explain unless you've seen the show.

Art Style: A very non-traditional one but all the same a wonderful one, one that adds to the beauty and grace to the entire thing, you know, even with the whole terrorism thing going on, it still feels incredibly light and beautiful. The colours used also bring this hopeful air to the place, making it seem like "every thing's going to be okay at the end."

Comparison to Death Note

In both these anime's we see a lot of internal struggle with the protagonists/antagonists but they never stop doing what they believe is right, something he can much easily relate to Light from Death note. They both have strong beliefs in wanting to make the world better or wanting to expose the truth. There are a lot of riddle games with the police, clues and hints throughout the entire thing too, very similar to what Light did, but whereas Light tried to push the police away from him the terrorists here use it to bring them closer.

Pros & Cons
Pros:
  • Plays with the psych of one's mind;
  • Intelegent strategies and mind games;
  • Dark sense of humor of the protagnists/antagonists;
  • It makes you think about the good and bad;
  • No romance, purely psychological/crime/thriller plot;
  • No fanservice.

Cons:
  • It's short.

All in all it's one of my favourite anime's, on par with Death Note,I can't decide which I like more; I've seen them both the same amount of times and it feels like there's always something you didn't notice the first time around.
I recommenced this if you're one of those people who, like me, is tired of all the fan service and the romance plots in every single story and just want something that will make you think,, that will occupy your head for some time.
