First we will start with the heart of this theory.
Could Red Leg Zeff's seizure of the Orbit (the boat Sanji was a cook on at a young age) potentially been a failed kidnapping or a kidnapping attempt while hired by the vinsmokes?
A youtube version of this theory can be seen here -
After seeing the open declaration of alliance with Big Mom a fellow pirate it is obviously shown that the Vinsmokes will do whatever is needed to accomplish their goal. Now lets think about the potential reasons for a link between the “coincidence” of another restaurant ship being attacked by someone who adores food and dreams of the all blue.
People in any world and especially the One Piece world are not hesitant to take drastic actions when offered the right amount of money. A good example of this is how Doflamingo was able to get the citizens of Dressrosa to turn against and some even offering to kill their former pacifist king that had only brought prosperity to the land. At this point, they knew that he was not responsible for any of the events of the overthrow of the kingdom 10 years ago.
Why would “Red Leg Zeff”, who may have been brutal, but has a deep respect for food and cooking accept an offer from a highly skilled and influential family of assassins to kidnap a 9 year old boy atop a restaurant in the ocean? Basically sabotaging someone that is living his dream.
Not only this, but the fact that while a great swimmer like Zeff did not attempt to save any one person on either boat except for Sanji. Almost all pirates in One Piece tend to show care for their crew-mates no matter how cruel or evil they may be. Spare Crocodile and less than a handful of all pirate captain we have seen in the series. There must be reason as to why the only three things Zeff attempted to keep after the unforeseen storm that capsized both ships. These three things were Sanji, food for Sanji, and a load of treasure more than likely given by the vinsmokes as an advance.
While on the island Zeff tells Sanji to sit on the opposite side of the isle from him and look for ships. Zeff sees the determination and tenacity of young Sanji and makes him think of his younger days. Zeff realizes he does not want Sanji to go back to that life. Sanji and Zeff then develop a strong relationship, and I am sure Zeff eventually explained to him what really happened that night.

Since then Sanji had been laying low on the Baratie with Zeff helping him and from then onwards until now, Sanji has always kept a keen eye not to get his picture taken or to expose his true identity. More than likely his ability to not be exposed came from strenuous training in the art of assassination as a child. When Sanji finally left and cried many tears it all hit him….. The fact that he was able to stay away from his strict and violent family while having his life erased from the Vinsmoke’s mind and all of the teachings Zeff had taught him throughout the years got our typically cool cook in an emotional stir. I believe that the Vinsmoke’s, while now knowing of Sanji’s existence are very upset with Zeff for hiding him out all of this time and now have placed a personal hit out on Zeff himself.
The shocked and upset look on Sanji’s face that kept him inside of Capone’s fortress was due to Capone’s right hand man Vito saying to Sanji “We know that Zeff is still alive and you wouldn’t want anything to happen to him now, would you?” This explains why Sanji did not fight back although he probably could have beat capone then and there. His love and respect for Zeff lead him to endure the situation, knowing that he will find a way to make everything right. since he is probably the most intelligent strawhat. Thus why he was trusted to lead the strawhats over to Zou and evade Big Mom while keeping the strawhats safe.
